My name is David Gibson, and I am a lifelong art world resident who has fulfilled a variety of roles over the years. I began as a staffer in the John Gibson Gallery (established by my parents, John and Susan Gibson, and run by my father for 34 years), where I managed the day to day for five years, including  installing exhibitions, mailing announcements, sending and receiving shipped artworks, hiring and managing staff, physical upkeep and office supplies, greeting gallery visitors, and a range of written and telephone based communications to a diverse international business network.  I was also a yearlong intern at Artforum Magazine in their advertising department, and worked as a preparator for six months at El Museo del Barrio. Starting in 2001 I curated exhibitions independently, wrote essays and reviews on a freelance basis, did studio and portfolio critiques, help private workshops on artist statements and professional etiquette, and lectured at several state and private universities. In 2017 I stopped curating to work privately providing art career services including most of the above described roles and duties. These days I write a lot, sometimes for private clients, and often for my email newsletter, The Other Side of the Desk. I offer custom professional services such as writing and promotions, studio and portfolio critiques, and counsel in career opportunities and professional acumen. If you have further questions, please use the contact form at the bottom. Have a great new year!
